VA Benefits: Disability, Pension, Education & Home Loans for Veterans
Veterans who served in active military, naval, or air service may be entitled to a wide range of federal benefits — from monthly disability compensation to home loan guarantees and education funding. Many eligible veterans never apply.
Who qualifies for VA benefits?
Eligibility varies by benefit type, but most VA programs require:
- Service in active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training
- Discharge or release under conditions other than dishonorable
- Minimum service requirements (generally 24 continuous months, or full period ordered to active duty)
Wartime service, disability connected to service, and income level determine eligibility for specific programs.
VA Disability Compensation
Monthly, tax-free payments for veterans with service-connected disabilities. The VA rates disabilities from 10% to 100% in 10-percentage-point increments.
2025 monthly compensation rates
- 10% disability rating: $175.51/month
- 30% disability rating: $524.31/month
- 50% disability rating: $1,075.16/month
- 70% disability rating: $1,716.28/month
- 100% disability rating: $3,877.79/month
Additional amounts may apply if you have a spouse, dependent children, or a dependent parent. Veterans rated 100% due to individual unemployability may receive the same rate even at a lower combined rating.
Veterans Pension
A needs-based benefit for wartime veterans with low income and limited assets who are age 65 or older, or permanently and totally disabled.
- Maximum annual pension rate (2025): $22,577/year for a single veteran (approximately $1,881/month)
- With a dependent spouse or child: up to $29,620/year
- Aid and Attendance enhancement: up to $27,567/year for a single veteran needing help with daily living
The pension supplements your income — the VA pays the difference between your countable income and the maximum annual rate.
GI Bill Education Benefits
The Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) is the most comprehensive education benefit for veterans who served after September 10, 2001.
- Up to 36 months of education benefits
- Tuition and fees paid directly to the school (up to in-state public school rates at private schools)
- Monthly housing allowance based on local military BAH rates
- Annual books and supplies stipend up to $1,000/year
- Eligible for use at colleges, trade schools, on-the-job training, and flight programs
- Unused benefits can be transferred to a spouse or dependent children if certain service requirements are met
VA Home Loan Guarantee
The VA does not make loans directly — it guarantees a portion of each loan made by private lenders, reducing lender risk and enabling veterans to receive better terms.
- No down payment required on most purchases
- No private mortgage insurance (PMI) required
- Competitive interest rates (typically below conventional rates)
- Limited closing costs
- No prepayment penalty
- Reusable — you can use the benefit multiple times
How to apply for VA benefits
- Identify the benefit you need. Disability compensation, pension, education, and home loans are separate applications with different requirements.
- Create a VA.gov account. Visit va.gov and create a verified account using Login.gov or ID.me.
- Gather your service records. You will need: DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty), service medical records, private medical records for disability claims, and financial records for pension applications.
- Submit your claim online. Most claims can be filed at va.gov disability claims. You can also work with an accredited Veterans Service Organization (VSO) representative for free.
- Track your claim. Log in to va.gov to check your claim status. Disability rating decisions typically take 100–150 days; simpler claims may be decided faster.
- Call for help: 1-800-827-1000 (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–9 p.m. ET)
